Tami Oldham Ashcraft (5)When the automobile culture started to spread in the US, the only way to get them from one place to the other was to hire a driver to drive them, say, from New Youk to Los Angeles. Well, same thing happens with yachts: wealthy people hire sailors to move them from one port to another. In 1983, Richard Sharp and his then girlfriend Tami Oldham Ashcraft were hired to transfer a 44-foot luxury yacht from Tahiti to San Diego. Although they started their journey under clear skies, they soon got overtaken by Hurricane Raymond. The yacht flipped, the mast snapped, and Sharp was flung overboard to his death. With no radio, no electronics, and bleeding extensively, Tami got her act together and rigged up a tattered makeshift sail. Calculating her position with a sextant, she achieved to reach the Big Island of Hawaii an unbelievable 42 days later.
