10 STORIES OF WOMAN SURVIVAL 2/10
When you watch surfers on big waves, you sometimes think it’s easy to do, but it is really a huge challenge and it’s that challenge that distinguishes a survivor from a regular person is their ability to be cold blooded under intense pressure. The case of surfer Bethany Hamilton is a great example. In 2003, Bethany headed out to Makua Beach in Hawaii with three other friends to catch the best waves of the season on a secluded beach. Things seemed under control until a huge tiger shark shot out of the water and ate Bethany’s left arm. (see picture). Instead of going into shock, Bethany used her remaining arm to paddle over to her friends to warn them, as well as other surfers, before making her way back to the shore. An incredible tale of selfless survival.
